Ten Leading Garage Door Closure Problems

Douglasville Garage Door Installation

Some problems are fixable on your own, with some simple issues that you can check and clear up. Often times it is not a technical issue or complete failure that keeps the door from working, and possibly something can be moved, a battery replaced or other simple adjustment on your part.

Some common problems include:

  • Transmitter batteries are dead: While this may be clear, it can be easily missed. Because garage door transmitters need power to work, the batteries need power as well in order to make the garage door open and close.
  • Problem with the photo eyes: Sometimes the garage door may open as it should but then not close at all when the button is pushed again. In this case you may want to take a look at the photo eyes, as they can become dirty or covered with cobwebs or something else that will block the light signal. They also can eventually become misaligned, causing the eyes to not match up on both sides.
  • The track is misaligned: If your garage door track is not aligned, it can be a serious problem. Those metal tracks that the door slides up and down on regularly can fall out of alignment after long-time wear. Sometimes gaps or dents in the tracks or the rollers lead to problems. Heavy doors make these issues worse over time, making use of the garage door dangerous.
  • Troubles with the transmitters: Many possible troubles with transmitters can stop them from working. This is usually simple user troubles like being out of range of your door, or dead batteries. While these seem simple, they can be checked, and if this is not a solution, then something more serious could be the problem that needs the attention of a professional.

  • Something may be blocking the garage door path: The reversing mechanism on the garage door keeps it from destroying objects that are in the way when it closes. This is an easy factor to determine when the door happens to close about halfway and then opens again. This could mean that something on the ground is in the way, or even the car may not be backed all the way into the garage. It could also be buildup in the tracks that prevents the rollers from moving forward.
  • Broken springs: If your garage door suddenly won’t open and the transmitters are definitely working properly, and you can hear power in the motor, the torsion springs are likely broken. Doors have torsion springs and if even one spring is broken, the opener may not handle the weight of the door. Broken springs are dangerous, and a professional is needed in most cases. Leave the door closed until a garage door repairman comes to inspect the problem. Springs are only functional for a specific amount of time, then they will eventually break and need replaced.
  • Garage door limit is incorrectly set: Quite possibly the garage door can close completely and then bounce right back up. While this could be any of a number of issues, it may just indicate that the open and close limits may need reset. The open and close limits tell the opener how far the garage door can move before it is completely closed.  With the settings out of line, the door hits the ground only to think that it is an object that is in the way and it jumps back up in order to prevent from crushing it. This only needs a setting reset.

  • Disconnect switch is enabled: There will always be a disconnect switch on the garage door opener that helps if power is lost. Use of this switch allows the opener to be turned off in this case so that the garage door can be opened and closed manually, with the ability to enter and exit the garage until electricity comes back on. It is important to remember that if you enable the disconnect switch in the event of power loss to switch it back after power comes back on. In this case you will hear the motor when you press the opener button, but the door won’t move.
  • The manual garage door lock was used: Quite simply the garage door may not open because the manual lock has been used and is still in place. If the motor runs for a few seconds then shuts off, and the garage door doesn’t open, this may be the case.
  • Tension springs or cables are broken: Garage door tension springs and cables are put in place to help the door lower safely and slowly while it is closing electronically. If this broken action occurs then the garage door may close really fast, an action that can be extremely dangerous. This could mean that any of the sensors or photo eyes along the track will not recognize objects, people or cars that are in the way of the door and anything can be crushed when it hits the ground. With the level of danger in this occurrence a garage door repairman is best to call in order to fix this problem.

Any of these things can be checked on your own to see if there is something that can be fixed or replaced in order to have the garage door working like new right away. If for any reason you suspect one of the more dangerous faults, a professional is always good to have at hand.
